The joy of summer.

But wait, no - it's still winter.  Thats right - we have 5 more days until the first official day of spring.  So why the hell did i have to run in 80 degree weather yesterday???

I fully acknowledge that i have done nothing but whine about the cold for the past three months.  guilty.  But now that it's hot, i want the cold back!!  Somebody has to be "that guy" that is never happy with the weather, and "that guy" is me!

So i went for a rematch on the north branch trail - only this time i had a dream - a dream of not puking on the north branch trail.  I was really aware of trying to pace myself.  My normal comfortable pace is about a 9:30, but since it was so bleeping hot, i tried to hold myself around 10 minutes so i did zap out all my energy in 3 miles.  Because this trail is near a lagoon, i assumed there would be a nice breeze.  I have no idea why i thought that, because it doesn't make any sense at all.  Here is a shot of my beautiful view:
Obviously, i jest.  But two miles in, having already sweated out what felt like a gallon, my mind was playing tricks on me.

I really had wanted to do a 10 miler to make up for the pukefest the previous night, but i did NOT have it in me.  I was exhausted on this run.  And so ill-equipped.  Normally there is at least a few weeks from the time it is 20 degrees to the time it is 80 degrees, and it allows me to figure out what the heck to wear and bring with me.

Things i should have had but didn't:
a water bottle (doi.)
sunblock
chapstick
electrolyte tab
a towel....(i sweat like a man.  not pretty getting back into the car)
bodyglide
the common sense to have run 12 hours earlier when it wasn't so hot and humid.

Ah well, lesson learned.  As i type this i was going to grab a quick few miles around the hood, but Mr. Matt has now crashed from an all-nighter, and i am on pup duty.  On the plus side, its not supposed to be so bad tonight, so maybe i will just get to go on a longer run then.

dear spring - why u no come?  WHY U NO COME???

  1. It always seems as if Chicago likes to skip a few season. Last year we had no spring and more like a fall than a winter. Now it has jumped right to summer. I'm going for a group run tonight and I'm hoping it will be a bit cooler. However, I packed for all types of weather. :)

  2. that looks like a pretty place to run! maybe when I'm actually allowed to run again you can take me there? just don't murder me in the woods and leave my body to rot.

    1. I kid you know, when i run through the woods, i cringe at everything i see that doesn't belong (trash, clothes, etc) because i am so afraid of finding a dead body.

  4. I agree! There was no warning of this shift from tights to barelegged weather! I did not have time to self tan and am therefore stuck wearing tights so I do not scare others. Blahh!
