Marathon training week ????: What the hell am i doing.

Miles: 28?  I am no longer keeping track.  I ran 5 days last week though!  I am attempting an intuitive approach to marathon training (Code:  this is all BS.  Things just aren't going to be ideal.  I am heading into a marathon next month undertrained, and there is nothing i can do about it at this point.)
Martinis: 3
Strength: Minimal
Stretching: Mostly foam rolling

Outlook:  I'm going to just do the marathon.  I will most likely die in this marathon, but whatever - i'm just going to do it.  My pace leader just ran the Lakefront 50k this weekend, and his story was so inspiring, that i feel like a total nerd being like "I'm undertrained and won't PR at this marathon"  So what if i won't PR?  It's kinda of nice to take the pressure off, and just run a marathon for fun.  And if i come in last?  Been there, done that.  After the first time, it doesn't seem like such a big deal.

I'm still struggling to find that whole "work-life balance" thing.  But i think I'm doing a lot better.  I even bought a file folder this weekend which i feel is very responsible and adult-like of me.  Sadly, its still sitting in the bag.  You win some, you lose some.  I am starting to get into a routine again, of when i can go to the gym, when i need to spend time with the dog, and so on.  I spent all of last week in a training seminar for an engineering CAD program, and let me tell you - exercising your mind is every bit as exhausting as exercising your body!

My brain is still sore.
Waffles has been getting her exercise on too!  We had our first agility class last week, and she's terrible.  Even though i have seen her jump clear over the coffee table on multiple occasions, she is terrified of the plastic pole siting 4 inches of the ground.  She would flip onto her back every time we got near it, and then proceed to be dragged through, knocking the entire thing over.  We are practicing at home with a swiffer and some yoga blocks.
So i'm still here, and i am still running a marathon next month.  I am also still reading everyones blogs at lunch, but for some reason i can't comment on my work computer.  I am debating asking IT to resolve the issue, but it probably isn't the most professional way to spend my lunch break.  Either way, just know i'm creeping on all of you.  Vwa ha ha!

  1. I find your biggest accomplishment in each of these updates to be the martinis drank. Are martinis not a normal part of people's marathon training plans..?

I think you need more martinis.

    1. Agreed. I can't even drink one martini - it is quite the accomplishment.

  2. I think not having the pressure of a PR is probably a good plan. I recently thought about all of the various things that could go wrong in my half this summer, and it's just easier to not worry about all of that and have fun running/drinking martinis.

Where are the agility classes you're taking Waffles to? We thought about that for Jude, since he has a ton of energy and loves jumping over things, but I don't know where to find them.

    1. K9 University on Lake & Sacramento. We are in the non serious class, but they have more competitive ones as well if you are interested in competing!

    2. Oh, we would definitely need a non-competitive class. I'll check into it, thanks!

K9 University! Waffles is by far the worst one, but she has so much fun doing it, you can't even be mad, haha

  4. I think you need more martinis& bloody Mary's

Just run it for fun, not every race needs to be a PR. (Although it is hard to fanthom running 26.2 miles for fun)

Poor waffles. I love to take CB for agility classes. I'm glad you're practicing in your place. I'm sure Waffles appreciates your kind gesture ;)

  5. I love that waffles freaks out over the little stick, maybe it just doesn't seem like a challenge as much as the coffee table!

Enjoying your runs is always a key, and if you PR it's just a double bonus.

    1. I have a feeling my entire year will be dictated by this rule!

  6. It could be worse. You could end up with the noro virus or end up with a 90 degree day....

  8. oh, Sara....you'll do just fine! Better to be undertrained and relaxed about it than overtrained and stressed. I know all about being undertrained, as my recent injury shit has forced me WAY off my training plan. My marathon is still 2 months away, so I can get some of it back, but I'm already starting to discount any "plans" I had about a PR......you'll be great!

    1. Bill is right, better undertrained and relaxed/healthy than overtrained and stressed/injured. I am going with being undertrained for my marathon in 3 weeks and will settle for doing the Run-Walk-Run method. The key is to do 1 minute walk breaks every 5 minutes even when I am feeling good in the beginning. That is my strategy, we'll see if it works!

    2. I would love to try run/walk, but the second i start to walk, my whole body turns on me, and is like "oh no, you had your chance at running!"

  9. One of my goals for this year is to relax and have more fun at my races. (Kind of an oxymoron to make a goal to have more fun, I know...) But by all means - just let loose and enjoy yourself at the marathon! Regardless of what happens, you are putting to shame the millions of people who have and never will run a marathon, ever!

  10. I am pretty confident that you will not die at your marathon next month. I just did 2 marathon distance training slogs this month and I didn't die. I just think have fun first and everything else will fall into place.

  11. Ha ha ha. When I get close to something I am supposed to jump over or on, I freak out too. No worries, Waffles.

    Ugh. CAD training. BARFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

I hope you do run for fun and make the most of it! :)

  12. I like your attitude, no pressure on yourself will probably help you rather than stressing about what you did not do.

  13. I don't think you will die at your marathon if that helps you. Think positive, you can do it....it's just 26.2 miles....right?

  14. Oh, Waffles. Definitely some crossed wires in that little brain of yours but we love you anyway.

I am totally not going to worry about my time at my marathon. I'm just there to cross that finish line!

  15. You inspire me, by keeping it real. With two 1/2 marathons looming the next TWO wekends I too have decided to say screw it to a PR, and just pray I don't die in the process.
