Welcome to the danger zone.

So, a weird thing happened last night – I threw my back out!  I suppose in the grand scheme of things its not that strange, but here are some things that seemed off about the whole thing:

  1.        I’m only 30!  And someone told me 30 is the new 20 (lies.  I told myself that.) But seriously, I’m not “throw your back out” old yet.
  2.         I’m a model of physical fitness! (LOLOLOLOLOLZZZZ) Ok, but in all seriousness, I am a reasonably fit human being that exercises regularly, and maintains a reasonable weight.
  3.        I generally avoid heavy lifting, or even light lifting.  Picking up objects and moving them is so 2012.
  4.        I have never really had back problems before.
*** I think I can still run, so don't cry for me.  But sitting on my couch drinking Martinis makes the pain worse (unless I drink lots of Martinis!) so maybe have a cocktail for me?

I suppose it’s possible that I just randomly threw my back out.  BUT, here’s the kicker – the two guys I share a work space with (that are the same age as me) have also thrown out their backs in the past few months!  I suppose it could just be karma getting me back for making fun of them for being old and out of shape (Damn my sass-mouth!!!)
The torture chamber.
So, we had a pow-wow this morning at work, and determined we have crappy desk furniture, because three young healthy people should not hurt their backs in such a short amount of time.  (if ever.)  Luckily, my back pain seems minor (compared to what they went through) and I don’t foresee physical therapy or anything drastic in my future.  As a means of getting better equipment, we came up with the plan to demand radical and expensive change that would naturally be shot down, (for example lunch time personal massages and a zen meditation garden) in hopes that the compromise could be new chairs.

Obviously, given the choice, I would have never had a “desk job.”  I would be much more suited to be like a forest park ranger, or a circus acrobat (fun gingerfoxxx fact:  My ancestors were circus trapeze artists!  The more you know.)  Despite the fact that I like what I do, and I seem well suited for it, my biggest regret is that I spend so much time sitting.  And no matter how many lunch break adventures or walking breaks I take, I still sit hunched over a computer for 8 9 hours a day.

Have you ever demanded upgraded tools for your job?  Do you have an interesting way to move/keep active during the work day?

Is your job also trying to kill you???

  1. I was wondering if there is an ergonomic issue going on at work! How is your posture?

It's very common to have back pain, even at a younger age, according to what I read when I was studying to be a personal trainer. The tricky part is getting rid of it. How are you feeling today?

Since I work for the part of the govt that does space design we have nice stuff to use at work. Phew. But, I still feel like I sit too much! Whenever I get up to use the toilet I do a walk around the floor, too :)

  2. It's TOTALLY an ergonomic issue! We have these multi functional screens that you can draw on, but they sit at a weird angle and force you to lean over your desk! Luckily we have heating pads and all that crap at home, so thanks to fast action and some stretching this a.m. It's improving. My poor coworker had to get tons of PT though!

  3. I threw my back out once while sneezing. It was probably the most embarrassing injury ever.

My office bought everyone these $500 ergonomic chairs a few years back, and even those don't totally help. I don't think it matters what you sit on, doing it for 8-9 hours a day is just bad. You guys should try a standing desk! I'd find that amusing if I saw it in my office, but it may also actually help.

  4. I just threw my back out a couple of weeks ago and I am only 29! It was so bad I missed 2 days of work and had to get numbing injections in my back. I would love to blame my crappy job, however, I am sure it was crossfit related. :-(

  6. I used to sit on a workout ball when I worked at a desk! Talk about working on my posture!

  7. I can't give advice. When I work from home, I lay on my stomach on the couch. Hope you feel better soon!

  8. I threw my back out a few years ago. Not sure why, but I think I was able to function later that day and make it back to work the next day.

    1. Maybe is some kind of ginger healing power? I was definitely not side-lined the way my co-workers were, thank god

  9. I hurt my back trying to use a rowing machine back when I was like.. 24. I thought, umm I'm a little young for this!

I try to get up and do some very attractive stretches at my desk at work every 30 or so minutes. Great conversation starters.

My workplace is pretty good about modifications to desk furniture... within reason.

    1. Luckily, since we are all suffering, I think no one would tease me for afternoon stretches!

  10. My running buddy Meredith and I have both converted our work stations to standing desks, on our own. She did hers with only $35 of cost from ikea, and her chronic hamstring problems have made substantial progress! My set up is a little less official, as I have a laptop work computer, so I use some specific books to prop my computer up high so I can stand, I take also a lot of walk breaks ( I've stopped calling, texting, or emailing people who are in the building, and walk to them instead) and when I sit I set a repeating timer at 3 mins to remind me to check my posture. I've had "issues" with my back since I was 19, and this is helping a lot! I also sit on a pillow (not kidding) during my commute to create a better angle for my hips/low back...let me know if I can help!

    1. Someone else actually mentioned a driving pillow, and I think I might get one. Even my new and improved commute is still longer than most

  11. My husband has tons of back problems from years of bad posture while sitting. And after I changed jobs 5 years ago and went from a job where I was up and down from my desk all the time to one where I sit all day is when I started getting more and more running injuries. I'm seriously debating a standing desk!

  12. Um yeah, having a neck injury that typically happens to the elderly? Yeah that's me...

I put my computer screen on a lift (aka, old books I found) that helps me from slouching. I also stretch a lot!!!

  13. I was just catching up...

I threw my back out when I was 30 too! Weird coincidence? I think NOT!! Btw, I did it while putting away groceries! WTF??
