Some Randoms.

1.  Are you following Badwater?  Mike Morton has less than a half marathon to go!!  I would also like to point out that 70 year old Arthur Webb is in 10th place currently.  Did i mention that he is 70?  Ok, good.  Our Illinois representative Scott Jacaway seems to be struggling - so send him some Illinois love vibes!!

2.  You know what would be worse than running 135 miles in death valley right now?
running 135 miles in Chicago, IL.  I have been watching the heat index, and it has consistently been worse here the entire time (because of humidity.)  Right now the heat index in death valley is 82.  In Northbrook, my current location, the heat index is 96.  Just sayin.

3.  I need some major inspiration for rock' n' roll this weekend.  Not only do i have a $0 budget for a costume, but it is going to be a toasty 90 degrees.  sigh.  At least that's cooler than 100 degrees?  I am just in desperate need of a cool, feel good race.  I am starting to doubt my abilities, and i am pretty sure That the RnR half this weekend will do nothing to alleviate this self doubt.  And i will have a crappy zero budget costume to boot.  Or maybe i will just run in my bathing suit...its going to be 90, after all.....

4.  I have consistently run 10-13 miles (minimum) every weekend for the last, i don't know, 4-5 months?  My feet, while not beautiful, are completely intact and unfazed.

And pink.
Matt has gone on one 11 mile run, and now has two black toenails ready to fall off.  Obviously, i do not try hard enough.
Any advice for soon to be toenail-less Matt?

5.  It has taken me all morning to write this in 90 second intervals.  Work is crazy this week.  I need a clone.  Mike Morton has just won Badwater.  It is still hotter in Northbrook.

6.  Since Cary mentioned the muffins, here is the recipe i used!  I think i added nutmeg because i didn't have cinnamon, and i made a pineapple glaze, because i love sugar.  They were delicious, and i can't stop eating them.

  1. I am so tired of hot. and humid. and hot. wah wah wah.

But evening hot is easier for me to deal with than first thing in the morning hot. I think it's less humid? or I'm less tired? who knows...

    2. I ran with a friend on Sunday and around 5 miles in the F bombs started happening. It was a sure sign that things were going downhill for me and we were only half way done. We are new friends so she's slowly learning my F Bomb ways. That's how I deal with heat, pain, thirst, poop, etc. Have you tried it?

  2. If my math is correct, I think Mike Morton ran around 10 minute miles for 135 miles. Amazing! Yeah, those Badwater guys and gals have it easy with that measly heat index of 82! I ran eight miles this morning (my outdoor thermometer said it was 99.9 when I finished) to prep for the RnR and I was seriously questioning my commitment as a runner during the last 2 or 3 miles. Running in the heat is not fun, not fun. Right now I am having dreams of running when it is 40 degrees! Anyway, as far as the black toenails go: You know how they say for running shoes to go up 1/2 a shoe size from your normal shoe size? Well, I need to go up 1.5 sizes! I need my toes to be free when I run and it is much better than having them hit the front of a too-small toe box. I don't have toenail issues anymore. The Fleet Feet guy said that as long as you are "locked in" your shoe, go for a size that lets your toes be free...

  4. This weather makes me so sad. The sweat dripping in my face on my morning runs? It's really my tears. Good luck this weekend! :)

    1. I don't even try to pretend its sweat, i just openly cry, right on the path. Sometimes i even lay there on the path, just so people have to stop and pity me.

  5. SOme sick part of me enjoys that Chicago is hotter than Badwater...
Come run with me and my hot Bachelor at RnR! Maybe you'll be able to keep up with him cuz I'm pretty sure I won't...maybe he'll carry us.

  6. First off, best of luck with the RnR Half this weekend.....I'll be thinking cool thoughts for ya! I'm so seriously done with this heat...

Regarding Matt's toenails, his shoes are probably too small.....either that, or he's been running a lot of downhills? I came out of Boston with a few discolored toenails (never turned black) and have lost 2 so far, but in 4+ years of running, that's a first.

    1. Seeing as how in chicago, we consider speedbumps hills, i am going to assume he has a faulty shoe size. I heard our feet swell more in the heat too, so maybe thats why he is just noticing it

  7. Yeah about the RnR - definitely was going to run, definitely paid almost $100 for the run and definitely think I'm not going to run it because of the temperature. I'm a pansy. That and I haven't really trained for it haha!

    1. you are not the first person to save themselves the suffering. If it weren't Matt;s first half marathon, i would probably skip it too.

  8. Ok I'm jealous of your healthy feet! Mine are hideous from running and I don't even run that much :(

Do you work/live in Northbrook?!?! I live there!

    1. I work up there! Thats why i run on the North Branch trail all the time, to avoid dealing with the traffic heading back into the city!

  9. 1. Anyone that runs BW is a complete hero in my book. Those are some very fit and sort of crazy athletes!

    2. I have no idea what the heat index is in Spokane, but 96 seems frightening to me!

    3. Could you make a fun sparkle skirt if you don't already have one for a costume? I made one for rock n roll Portland that cost less than $4 to make.

    4. Your feet look way better than mine! Maybe Matt needs to order 1/2 size bigger in his running shoes? I have to do that and it seems to do the trick!

  12. Two things: First off, thanks for posting the muffin recipe!

Second, I'll be right there with you this weekend suffering through the RNR, but I will definitely be on the lookout for your smiling face. You helped me perk up during the 13.1, so hopefully I can return the favor this time.

  14. Ok ok. Calm down! :) the temp might reach 90+ Sunday, but the race starts so damn early that I doubt it will be 80 by the time we finish.

Bad water. Yeah. After running in the heat here I actually kind of want to do it. But I guess it's a cooler than expected year for them. Ok. No I don't want to do that 135 mile race.

Your feet look great! Mine aren't terrible, but I have some major calluses on my big toes. And I love them because I don't get blisters anymore.

Don't psyche yourself out over RnR. Seriously I think it won't be as hot as the women's half we did :)

    1. Thats what i am hoping, the womens half was sticky and gross, but manageable. I still am not expecting to PR though :-/

And if you do ever do badwater, i will be on your crew, haha

  15. I hope RnR isn't hot for all of you! I'll be sending nice cooling thoughts to all of you. I wish this stupid foot would heal so I could actually get out to some races.
