Fun fact friday

Sorry for the lack of posting - i am a grouchy old lady.

Did you know that the Boston Marathon this weekend is the oldest marathon?  (you know, besides that whole Pheidippides death march thing.  I suppose i should say its the oldest annual marathon.

Also, did you know that Monday is also Patriot's day?  So all the more reason we should all be getting the day off to obsess over our comrades running boston this year.  While we wear red white and blue.

Did you know that for a female in my age group to qualify for boston, they have to have a qualifying time of 3:35?  Thats a joke.  A god damn joke.  I will see you Boston Marathon, about 50 years from now.

Even with those BOGUS qualifying times, there will be over 40%  women running it this year?  That means that there are a LOT of fast ladies out there.  Pretty awesome considering 40 years ago K-switz was nearly yanked from the course for not producing the mandatory penis.

Did you know that the famous "heartbreak hill" of Boston is only a fraction of the size of the continuous hill at miles 6-8 of the flying pig half marathon (and marathon) that i will be running in a couple weeks?  Awesome.  way to choose them Sara.
In 1980, Rosie Ruiz won the Boston Marathon.  Only it turns out she only ran like the last mile of it.  There were a lot of suspicions when she crossed the finish line (minimal sweat, didn't appear fatigued, couldn't remember key highlights of the course) but the biggest indicator that something was off was her jiggly, untrained thighs.  She didn't have the thighs of an elite marathoner.  The real kicker is that she did the same thing the previous year at the NYC marathon in order to qualify for boston.  Amazing.  You gotta love her perseverance at cheating.  It's a rare quality.

So there ya go, a few fun facts about the Boston Marathon.  But seriously - good luck and have a great race to everyone running Boston this year.  I will join you, as soon as they eliminate qualifying times, or invent bionic legs.  Whichever comes first.

  1. Thanks, GF.........you don't need bionic legs, 'cause mine are most DEFINITELY organic! You can always run Boston as a charity runner....it's the only way I'd ever get to do it, as I simply don't have the speed to qualify.

Think cool thoughts on Monday.....we might need the help!

    4. Your bad luck? Are you kidding me?????? You make me laugh so hard sometimes that I can't even bring myself to write a coherent comment in response......and if I happen to have students walk in while I'm reading, they all want to know why Mr. Fine is laughing so hard....and I usually can't tell them! LOL

      Glad you're on board....

  6. I have a ton of friends from my running club doing Boston this weekend. Including one who is two years younger than me. She is crazy fast and I am jealous of her. Like you, I figure I'll be in Boston in about 25 years....

  10. I love all the facts! I don't think Boston is EVER in my future but I admire the people who go for it!

NYC has all of these crazy checkpoints at the marathon because of Rosie (cameras, about 98797 of those mat things...). Thanks, Rosie!

(I am actually hopeful that when people see me show up at a race with my jiggly thighs that they think I cannot run fast either... hahahah)
