Winning.

I am super excited because i just won a free entry to the CARA lakefront 10-miler!! (ahem, SUCK IT 13.1 HALF MARATHON)  In order to enter, i just had to post my favorite picture of myself running.  I chose this one:
If there was ever a picture that captured my nature as a runner, it is this one.  I had over indulged in whiskey shots the night before, but i still woke up and ran the Palos Hills route with Eric (7.5 hilly miles)  And as a bonus, it was about 90 degrees by the time we finished, so i had a lovely whiskey sweat thing going on.  It wasn't pretty, but at least i was out there.  (even if i was lying in the grass whimpering like a giant baby)

I am pumped for the CARA 10-miler, primarily because it is basically a 10 mile party. Check it out here if you don't believe me.  My main concern is that the weekend of this race, it will be three weeks until my very first marathon.  Translation= I should be running a 20-miler that day.  OUCH.  I guess it works out well, because i get 10 miles to myself, and then i have 10 more with race support that will mimic what it will actually be like during my race. My goal pace for the marathon is between a 9:45 - 10:00  (all of this is subjective, because for all i know, i will get out there and realize that marathons suck.)  So it will definitely be sad to watch all my friends blow by me at the 10-miler.  There's a good chance that i might actually be the last one to cross the finish line, but as long as someone saves at least one beer for me, i think it will be ok.

In other news, with my first marathon only a month away (eep!) I am on a mission to rehab my diet.  I need more protein and less sugar! In general, i've got the whole lunch and dinner thing down.  I love to cook, and in general, we have veggie filled, primarily vegetarian meals.  Breakfast is a disaster however.  Other than WAY too much coffee, i find myself craving sugar in the AM.
Perhaps i am partly to blame for buying candy in bulk. (but only partly)

I really wish i could get into smoothies and protein shakes, but for the life of me, i just do not find them appetizing.  During the summers i will sometimes have slimfast after an early morning run, but that stuff has just as much sugar as the yummy yummy candy.

Any ideas on quick and easy low sugar breakfast goodness?  adding protein without having to add meat??  I have 40 days to become a lean mean marathoning machine that is not cracked out on sugar all the time.

  1. I got nuthin re: sugar. I'm sitting here with 4 kids' easter baskets screaming at me. And I don't like protein shakes much either.

Last year I ran 10+ on my own and then finished my 22-miler off with fort2base. It was really fun, and a nice distraction away from how far I'd really gone. But really slow? Yes :) Kim made it much more fun than it would have been on my own though - maybe you can talk someone into sticking with you?

    1. Luckily it is a smaller friendly race, so even if i don't know anyone, i might just latch onto someone running the same pace as me!! :D

  2. My high protein breakfast is two hard boiled eggs, (both whites, one yolk) made into egg salad using only enough mayo to make it stick together a bit. Then I buy the whole grain Thomas English Muffins (100 calorie ones), toast the English Muffin and put the egg on it and eat it open face style. This is great because you can make it the night before.

  3. Congrats on WINNING! :)

Greek yogurt and cottage cheese are both great sources of protein. If you do overnight oats with milk and greek yogurt, you can make them taste however you want without them being too sugary.

    1. I do love cottage cheese, but it tends to get boring so fast! I will have to try these overnight oats everyone raves about....

  4. CONGRATS on the win! Woot!

I normally make overnight oats for breakfast. It's great cause you make it the night before and you can grab it before you go to work. I normally do 1/2 cup oatmeal, container of chobani 1/4 cupe almond milk and a banana. sometimes i add in a scoop of protein powder for an extra kick!

    2. You sorta can, but I use chocolate protein powder, this stuff in chocolate and I actually really like the taste.

It tastes like watered down hot chocolate if that makes sense?

  5. Alright, how the hell can I win an entry for this 10 miler? I would run it with you at that pace, since I will probably die at anything faster.

I make oats, too like Kelsey except I literally keep my oats at work, add 1/2 cup oats, 1 cup water, nuke it for 1 minute, and pre-package blueberries & strawberries and protein powder to mix in. Or you can get PB2 which is powdered peanut butter minus all the hydro-oils and all the protein sans meat.

  6. So excited that you won! My bff ran that race last year and did awesome :)

I recommend doing the 10 before the race so you don't run too fast! It's really hard not too when everyone else is!

Hmm, peanut butter at breakfast? I don't know... I rarely have protein with breakfast. I have a protein shake mix I love but you don't like them. Hmm.

P.S. I thought of you yesterday when I was at Target looking at the Easter candy.

P.P.S. What happened to the "receive reply comments" (or whatever) button?

    1. I have to do the 10 before, otherwise i will see the beer at the finish line and just quit! And i have no idea what the deal is with my blog. Sometimes it just randomly disables things for a couple days without telling me. The usually always come back though.

  7. Congrats on winning!

I'm running that race, too, with an entry I won at a CARA running group. I'm excited, but I'm not nearly in 10-miler shape yet. Trust me, you won't be the last to cross the finish line! It might be me!

Also, I ran my first 10-miler last year on a day that should have been a longer marathon training run, and I kicked butt! I ran a 4-ish mile "warm up", then ran the race, and then ran home. Turns out, it was the best race I'd ever run!

So I think you're going to be awesome! And definitely not last!

  8. Woot for the win! That's the best revenge. Can you do eggs? Great protein there without doing a shake.

  9. Congrats on the win! And don't stress hon, you got this. I can't stand the shakes, but eat other protein enriched foods...

  10. I eat greek yogurt daily. That's my protein boost when I don't feel like scrambling egg whites. And even if I did eat egg whites, I'd still have greek yogurt at some point during the day. I like it and it likes me = win. And I don't want to talk about Easter candy. I refuse to quit eating it so I probably won't be able to fit into my running clothes by the weekend.

  11. I ran the CARA Lakefront 10 last year and had a good time. Both my actual race time was good and I just had a good race overall. It's not too crowded. They had to change the course up a bit this year due to construction and I hear there might be a hill or two....

As for breakfast, I eat the same thing almost every morning. A whole wheat English muffin with peanut butter and a banana. For awhile I also tried whole grain waffles (frozen...just put in the toaster) with strawberries, Greek yogurt, almonds, and a bit of honey.
